Prophecy, in truth, is not only about predicting the future. More deeply, it points to the nature of our human experience that makes the future I inevitable or not. This thoroughgoing review of two critical voices that have moved so many of us – and have been part of the conscience of the western world in our lifetime –will include both a slow and careful appreciation of the poetry of their writing at its best; as well as of their prophetic voices that are capable of directing us to the spirit; to our most redeeming human capacities; as well as to an unsullied indictment of the psyche of our nation and our civilization – and its potential future. As Leonard Cohen sings: “I've seen the nations rise and fall, and heard their stories, heard them all; but love's the only engine of survival.”
